SOPHIA CHANG | ILLUSTRATOR

SOPHIA CHANG | ILLUSTRATOR

I am a huge font/design appreciator. I spend way too much time checking out new fonts and design work to draw inspiration from in my music and my art. I am also a fan of NY life. When I first stumbled on Sophia Chang’s art, it featured NY artists, hustlers and shakers. But the best part was that it was captured in her ability to rework the images into illustration. Check out more of her design work here.

BONDAX

BONDAX

UK’s Bondax strikes again with cool post Summer time grooves with this latest video for “Baby I Got That”. As a fan of electronic music on all fronts, I love Bondax! Very atmospheric chill beats that place you in a zone. With this latest video, they demonstrate a deep appreciation for the 90’s soul with what sounds like Soul II Soul drum samples fused with keys and R&B samples. Listen!

DANNY BROWN

DANNY BROWN

Danny Brown has been doing his thing for a minute. A huge push has been in effect for this talented artist. At times he throws hints and inspiration of the LA’s Pharcyde but still being of a different clothe. Watch him in action!

RAINY MILO

RAINY MILO

Im so grateful to live in an era where soul music is spanning into a thousand different directions. One of them being in the 80 bpms with soft snares and 808’s accompanied by minimal keys and bass. Rainy Milo exemplifies this great production. It makes me want more from her. Check out her sounds!

HOMEBOY SANDMAN

HOMEBOY SANDMAN

I caught Homeboy Sandman at SXSW in 2010. I was hooked. By 2011 we linked up at the following SXSW and lots of great things had happened since. Now working on releases for Stonesthrow, this brother gets to showcase his unique rhyme patterns to a new audience. Peep these great videos!

MARC MARON

MARC MARON

I’ll never forget that weekend morning while en route to the gym I had my radio set to KCRW and I heard the voices of 2 giggling men discussing drug abuse. It was awkward to say the least but as the time went by I realized these two men were discussing their own history and reflecting back to the good times and bad.

XXYYXX

XXYYXX

It’s been a great year for one of my favorite new electronic acts XXYYXX. At only 16 years of age I think it’s safe to say this brother has a great road ahead of him. Based out of Florida and set to release more gems as self releases I say it’s a matter of time before he gets picked up and becomes a household name.

STEPHEN WILTSHIRE

STEPHEN WILTSHIRE

Stephen Wiltshire is a British architectural artist who has been diagnosed with autism. When I heard of his story I was intrigued and began looking at his work and was really moved at his ability to use scribbles as a sky line and make the horizon look complete. Check out this cool short piece on his work!

MIGUEL

MIGUEL

Every time I see Miguel we crack jokes about our first time meeting at a small spot on Cahuenga and Hollywood Blvd. Tokyo was the spot and I use to lug my turntables and play to a great fun crowd. Miguel was our guest artist and we just hit it off.

POOLSIDE

POOLSIDE

Top 5 of 2012! I think Ive said that 4 times so I kinda hope nothing fresh comes out between here and December. Poolside’s latest release “Pacific Standard Time” has heat in so many different time signatures and tempos! Check em out!

HIRO KURATA

HIRO KURATA

My eyes are always drawn to color and texture. Art instructors always taught me that the human eye always works it way from top left to bottom right. I always look for the mess, the mumbo jumbo of colors. I see a lot of that in Hiro’s work. Check it out!

ZACH SEKOFF

ZACH SEKOFF

Kinda hard to believe this his is 16 years old but he has the soul of a divorced witty “seen it all” kinda guy who lives in the Marina and reads the NY Times kinda dude. He just released his latest project entitled “Ancestors” via Stussy. Check him out tonight (22/August) at Low End Theory!

FREMONT JUMP

FREMONT JUMP

I’m not sure why Im into capturing people (or myself in the act of jumping but there is a beauty to seeing someone or something in the air for that split second. It’s my last night in Fremont so what better way to end my trip then with a jump fest?

ERIMAJ

ERIMAJ

I came across this cut a few months ago and played it on one on one of my mixes a few months back entitled “Jesus Loves Me”. I loved his the simplicity of his work. His voice carried the track and was accompanied by a thick heavy drum bricks and hard piano chords. This brother just sent me his new album and I cant wait to give it a full listen.

PARRA

PARRA

When I visited Amsterdam last year everyone was telling me about Parra. Parra this! Parra that! Never got to link with him but I remember LA’s HVW8 Galley showcasing his work as well as getting love from Stussy. I love this home made video he did as an introduction of his work. Check it out!

FREMONT STREET

FREMONT STREET

Ever since I was a kid I was able to see through the magic of things. Instead of going to Disneyland as a kid and enjoying the dancing bears and animals on stage I was far more interested with the electronics and devices that went into the making it all happened. I am on day 2 of staying in Fremont (North of the Vegas strip) and I found this community very interesting for many reasons.
