OWUSU “GOODNIGHT”

OWUSU “GOODNIGHT”

Possibly one of the most beautiful songs of 2013. Big up to my dude Scribe for passing this my way some months ago. When you do a radio show after midnight sometimes you want to sound design the late vibes of the night. You want the listeners to feel as if this is wind down time in preparation for the week ahead. This song fit perfectly to into my sets.

PATTERN BAR RECAP | 27 FEB 2013

Good times at Lis-Uh-N last night. Managed to grab a quick bite with friends at Umami Burger then warm things up on the turntables. Lots of special friends in the building. My friend Yash shot some great video while I was up playing something a little different and special. The new Kwabs is the first track which is really cool and mellow followed by a Waajeed beat. Anyways, further proof we like to experiment with sounds on Wednesday nights.

PHIL GERUS

PHIL GERUS

These cuts sound a bit dated compared to his new work. When I say “dated” I don’t mean that in a sour way, but rather more mellow nu disco where as his latest release is a silky sexy mix of 80’s synth soul as if Al B Sure worked on track, put it away and it now just saw the day of light. Phil Gerus hails from Moscow. Fusing mellow beats over low fi drum and synths that are straight out of the opening credits of an 80’s flick. Take a listen.

TALKING MUSIC WITH GARY BASEMAN

TALKING MUSIC WITH GARY BASEMAN

Got to sit in with Gary Baseman and talk about music that has inspired his work over the years as part of KCRW’s Guest Dj Project which is set to air soon as he gets ready for his exhibit at the Skirball Cultural Center. We talked about the songs that have him develop his artistic voice and I must say, I walked way really impressed and also moved about his personal stories.

New gems on the sultry and sexy tip from Inc., $hift Key reworks a Sisqo classic and Wax Poetics gives us the throwback sounds of Kendra Morris. Big finds of the week from from Phil Gerus who has an amazing EP complete with vintage 80’s synths and soul. Also digging the Brooklyn Shanti release. And how about that new Bonobo featuring Erykah Badu!? So nice I had to save it for for the end. Hope you enjoy!

I began the mix with some old and new gems and had a certain direction I wanted to go in but checked my inbox and due to requests had to end set one with a Donald Byrd tribute including Black Moon’s “Buck Em Down” which was the record I first purchased that introduced me to the sounds of the late great. LORENZ RHODE “ANY KIND OF PRESSURE” FEAT. JAIME LIDELL

Seriously it’s a positive day here at AnthonyValadez.com! Earlier I posted that wonderful new Laura Mvula video to kick off the day and now I come across this highly slept on video feat. Jaime Lidell on the vox! Love the way the video just starts right in the middle of the song and Lorenz just chilling on the keys.
