CULTURE + REAL TIME ADVENTURES
Great evening last night at the TOMS shop in Venice off Abbot Kinney. This is my new local spot! Wi Fi, awesome drinks and dog friendly! Big thanks to all the friends who came out last night on a perfect Spring time evening. Also got to meet some listeners of the radio show which is really cool. Putting a face with a twitter or FB friend is always fun!
We are at it again! Into The Night returns to the Skirball Cultural Center in July! I’m excited to be back on the turntables with Hunter Hunted performing live!
Just got hipped to Emmavie! This James Blake cover is just too dang sweet! Big thanks to Tall Black Guy for his latest rework of the Sade classic. Played this last week at Pattern Bar and got a great response. Newness from all musical fronts. Hope you enjoy!
Wheeew! What a Sunday it was at UCLA for the Jazz Reggae Fest. The temperature was just right as folks began to enter for the long haul of great artists such as Grouch and Eligh, Jhene Aiko, Common, Santigold and has. I kicked things off with an obvious Roy Ayers classic to kick off the festival. My man Thurz held down mic duties. This is one of my favorites spots to play records at. Folks seriously move to just about anything! Peep the pics!
Sayers was super super cracking last night! Met some new folks, hung with some old ones. Big love to Apl De Ap for swinging through and getting his fist pumping on. At one point I thought the stage was going to collapse. It was absolute bonkers. Hope to see you next Saturday night!
Great way to kick off Memorial Weekend! Big love to all the friends and fam who got down with us! Boy oh boy Im super pooped from tonight. Hope to see you next week!
Next Thursday early evening I’m playing records at the Venice TOMS shop off Abbot Kinney. Looking forward to seeing the art by Chase and checking out the new shoe line! Sounds kick off at 6:30-8 pm! Swing through and say hi! Would love to see all my fellow Venice locals!
I had a blast last night at LATIDO! Lots of overflow from the Kings game (Whoop Whoop) and saw lots of friends in the building. Got to mix in some Depeche Mode into some cumbia which was possibly my highlight of the night. Also got to meet some cool music loving folks from Philly. Pretty fun night as usual. Hope to see you next Thursday night at Cana Rum Bar!
I had a great morning hanging at Dorsey High School as part of The Grammy Foundations Grammy Camp/Basic Training. It was also awesome to be joined by the amazing and talented producer Mike Elizondo known for his production work with Dre, Eminem, Tegan And Sara, Fiona Apple and many others. Also joining us was Dolly who helps with coordination and booking of talent for award shows such as The Espy’s and various other programs.
I played this on KCRW and dropped on a mixtape. When I first heard it I loved it! Now a video drop! Jeni kills this cover of JT’s Suit and Tie. Soulful, smooth and chill. Thank me later!
3 words I thought I would never hear! Dude is back!! Interesting video but Im diggin the track! Its been almost 11 year since I heard anything from Remy. Let me know what you think!
Yes! Yes! These two on one stage performing Lady then into Music Sounds Better With You. The XX keep it mellow and moody but Jessie takes it to church. Good for her! Her new track with Mayer Hawthorne is fire!
A big Happy Birthday to KG Superstar! Right after my set at Pattern Bar I headed over to The Room in Hollywood and held down a set alongside Dj’s B-hen and Tendaji Lathan who threw down some mean sets! It’s been a year or so since I dropped a set so I wasnt sure wether to go deep soul or dancefloor madness.
Im stoked to be a part of this year’s UCLA Jazz Reggae Festival this Sunday! This is my third year and this line up is super fly! Super stoked to see Jhene Aiko on this bill. Bring the sunscreen, beach towels and enjoy an all day concert. Thurz will be holding down the hosting duties and I’ll be on the turntables all day as well. Make sure to say hello!
It’s been years since Maxinquaye dropped and mystified my ears. He followed up an equally dark and heavy beat album which I loved. Then from there, I’m not sure what happened. I got his latest album in the mail and I put it into my disc player in the car and for the next hour I was actually blown away with this album!
Back after a nice vacation and stepped into the basement super amped laced with a fat record bag full of new gems. Lots of young producers and artists getting shine on this past Monday’s program including IAMNOBODY,Lakim, Def Sound, Zach Sekoff, King Most, Chance The Rapper, Abjo and more. Also cool gems from Miguel, Mobb Deep, Warp’s Jono McCleery and Irma Thomas on the throwback tip. On the fresh out of the record bag tip, new Daft Punk, Mayer Hawthorne teams up with Jessie Ware and Japan’s Budamonk and Mistu The Beats from the Jazzy Sport camp.
He’s been labeled a visionary, masterful director, photographer, pervert, artist etc etc. I have always respect this man. Sometimes I take pictures around the city and catch something Im not sure I should share out of fear of feedback. But looking at his photo’s has only pushed me to share those intimate shots because of Larry’s perspective that this is reality. This is what’s really going on. To hide it is to deny it. His photo book Tulsa is a must see documenting drug use, junkies and dealers. Peep the video.
The EP just dropped earlier in the month on Ninja Tune. And I love this so much I featured him on my latest mix! Jono’s voice at times reminds me of a young Gil Scott Heron
I’m playing one of his features tonight on KCRW. And have long been a fan for this Queens emcee. Finally, a rap video that brings a smile to my face! Enjoy!
Every time I walk my Smedley Butler III Esq. aka Lord Smed of Valashire I get to see some interesting stuff along the Venice boardwalk. Having a pet has allowed me to get out of the house more and more and see things that inspire me to make music or take pictures. I took these this evening. Hope you dig!
History in the making! The Supreme Team unite on a special Wednesday night. Too much sexy and love in the room might make the Earth explode but we are willing to take that risk! They said it could never be done! The doctors advised us against it! The pundits dismissed us in 2012! News analysts predicted our demise on a week night! Club owners said our energy was too much for venues! And we are doing it! Making it happen! Positive energy! YESSSSSSSSS!!!
Last night was a reminder to rock shorts at The Goods. I got home full of sweat but it felt good! Big ups to all the folks from the KCRW events department for getting down with us after hosting an intimate night w/ Quadron. I got to catch the first set then had to fly over to soundcheck and all systems were set. Also big love to Dj Daz in the building. Peep the pics and hope to see you next Friday night as we proceed! Salsa classics, 808’s, classic gems new gems, anthems and heat rocks!
Tonight! Your’s truly and KG Superstar bring spring time vibrations to The Goods at Zanzibar for another Friday night jump off. Im feeling extra pumped for tonight. Last week we had friends and fam in the building and I’m hoping to see a few more. Send me your guest list anytime today before 7 pm to be added. Hope to see you tonight!
I watched an 11 minute piece on the Philly Sound w/ Gamble and Huff. There was a clip of this in the piece where the Jacksons where in session with the production team. This is one of those tracks that I would skim through but when I saw the video and the happiness MJ has well, I revisited the track and now its on repeat.
Taking off for vacation early Sunday morning but wanted to share with you some pics from Cana Rum Bar and The Goods at Zanzibar! Tonight I’ll be at The Sayers Club ducking from ice cubes, watching folks go ape nuts hanging from the the chandeliers and the usual madness.
This gem is loaded with quotables. Each word delivered with passion. And Cannon on the beat!?!?! WHoooop! Peep the video!
The Summer jam is here! TL steps up w/ support from the Menehan Street Band. Peep the video.
It was one crazy weekend and this Monday night session in the basement was just the venting I needed. New Quasimoto, Theophilus London, Jai Paul, XX, Coco O of Quadron, Toro Y Moi teams up w/ Hodgy Beats of OFWGKTA plus classics from Keith Sweat, Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack, Kool G Rap. Hope you dig!
E for effort. A nice cover of Andre’s original. Nothing new, no new twist or changes. But still cool! Watch the live version.
Random shots around Boyle Heights on Cinco De Mayo. Quick stop and hang with Gomez Comes Alive and Nancy at Espacio 1839. Hope you dig these shots around Mariachi Plaza.
What a weekend! LATIDO at Cana! First Fridays at the Natural History Museum! The Goods at Zanzibar! Sayers! Whooop! Here is a photo recap of what went down. One of the wonderful things I love about deejaying is playing to different crowds and venues. Something new every time. Peep the pics!
This week has been crazy for me personally. My perspective on life changed a bit due to a sudden health scare and the entire time I walked more, sat in the shower more, thought more and restricted myself from more work. But the camera was still in hand. Peep the pics!
New gems from Joy Orbinson reworking one of my favorite Donell Jones cuts + James Blake, The XX on the Jaime XX re edit tip, De La Soul, Nickodeums, Baths, Rudimental, Extra Medium + some disco boogie via The Time, Kid Creole and First Choice. Peep the Bird cut! Fresh out of Toronto and one of my favorite artists at the moment! Hope you enjoy!
