WEEKEND RECAP

WEEKEND RECAP

You know it’s Summer time when folks come to the clubs wearing less and less. And what better way to kick off the season then with some new wheels! The residencies were fun this weekend. Thanks to all who came out to Cana Rum Bar, Zanzibar, Sayers and at Sunday Sessions at Grand Park! Fun times all around. Hope to see you back at Grand Park for our 4th of July jump off! Info here.

KCRW PLAYLIST | 25 JUNE 2013

KCRW PLAYLIST | 25 JUNE 2013

This has got to be my favorite show of all time. New reworks from the last Yasiin Bey record, Trinidad James gets remixed by Myth Sizer out of France, and Roseaux jazzes things up a notch with Aloe on the vocals. Somehow I managed to do a live remix of Massive Attack’s Tear Drop which we shot on Instagram! Don’t forget you can download the first set! Hope you dig! See you next Monday night.

MUSIC FOR A BETTER LIVING | HAMMER MUSEUM | 11 JULY 2013

MUSIC FOR A BETTER LIVING | HAMMER MUSEUM | 11 JULY 2013

I love playing records with Eric J Lawrence! Coolest dude that walks into a building with his music bag. I’m excited to be back at the Hammer for this wonderful series celebrating the music and architecture in the summer time! I’m doing an early set then off to Cana that night but I will stick around long enough to check out Ximena Sarnana!

INTO THE NIGHT | SKIRBALL CULTURAL CENTER | 12 JULY 2013

INTO THE NIGHT | SKIRBALL CULTURAL CENTER | 12 JULY 2013

We are back! Another Friday night in July at the Skirball! These folks really know how to throw a party. Looking forward to getting down on the turntables alongside some KCRW favorites Hunter Hunted and Harriet! I’m also excited to see local Fairfax artist Gary Baseman and Sarah Elgart in action! Did you ever hear our guest dj set with Baseman! It was a blast. More info on this fun event here.

STYLE WARS | OSCAR OUTDOORS | 28 JULY 2013

STYLE WARS | OSCAR OUTDOORS | 28 JULY 2013

It’s Summer time! Let’s get out and hang on a Sunday evening and watch one of my favorite counter culture documentaries that inspired Mear One to get involved in art! We have been planning this for some time and Im finally excited to see this come intro fruition. The folks over at the Oscar Outdoors and KCRW’s Event Department have been hard at work to make this happen! I’ll be on the turntables with some B Boys and street artists showcasing work in real time.

SNAP, CLICK: A LIFE IN PHOTOGRAPHS | JULY 13 2013

My very first public showing of my photographs! Big thanks to the folks over at Gabba Gallery who are big fans of the blog! I’m excited to share some of my favorites that capture the theme of the show. I’m also excited to be showing alongside some talented and brilliant maestros who will also be a part of this show. We are having a little party on the 13th of July and I would love to see you

MoCA RECAP | 22 JUNE 2013

MoCA RECAP | 22 JUNE 2013

Yesterday Chris Douridas and I held down music duties at the MoCA. I got to my soundcheck a little early and decided to explore the new exhibit being featured inside the museum. I was impressed! The minute you walk into the building it almost feels like you have entered a lost civilization built of clay and stone.

A NEW SCULPTURALISM | 22 JUNE 2013

A NEW SCULPTURALISM | 22 JUNE 2013

A New Sculpturalism: Contemporary Architecture from Southern California is part of Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture in L.A. This collaboration, initiated by the Getty, brings together seventeen cultural institutions from April through July for a wide-ranging look at the postwar built environment of the city as a whole, from its famous residential architecture to its vast freeway network, revealing the city’s development and ongoing impact in new ways.

KCRW PLAYLIST | 18 JUNE 2013

Seems like this show featured loads of records I slept on from Mocky, Richard Schneider Jr and this beautiful Roseaux project featuring Aloe Blacc on the vocals. Do your self a good favor and make sure to peep those back to back gems from Roseaux! Kicked off the set with this awesome Jose James remix that manipulates the time signatures in a truly brilliant way!

CHINATOWN SUMMER NIGHTS RECAP

CHINATOWN SUMMER NIGHTS RECAP

Night one was awesome! I got there early enough to catch some of the energy and bump into my dude Roy Choi! Great ceremonies by the local Martial Arts group, unveiling of the Bruce Lee statue and many cool vendors and live performances presented by the LA Weekly. It was awesome to see so many friends come out and get down with us on a Saturday evening! KG arrived and we just cranked it up a few notches only to blow the power towards the end of our set. Apologies! Peep the pics!

ROADTRIP

ROADTRIP

Last weekend Allen (Plug Research) and I took a road trip up to the Bay area to shoot this new video for Shortcircles new single. I grabbed the camera, packed my bag and hit the road for a couple of days. It was cool to see the Shortcircle studio in the heart of East Oakland.

RIP DARONDO

RIP DARONDO

I had the pleasure of watching this man record some sessions one day with The Park. The way I shoot is I just simply feel out the artist’s energy. Derek said “just shoot” but I was never sure if Darondo was down for a camera in his face. Darondo became more welcoming with his one liners and laugh. Every laugh exposed a few missing teeth but a warm and loving heart. I just found out Darondo passed and it made me want to unearth this session.

NHM100 RECAP

NHM100 RECAP

Big love to the folks over at the Natural History Museum for celebrating 100 years of science in LA! It was fun playing records alongside Raul Campos and Canyon Cody during the celebration. I missed the Gza’s set but caught to catch him in the elevator as he took pictures with fans but watching Devo knock out “Whip It” was the highlight of the evening as I watched from the top of the building.

LATIDO AT CANA RUM BAR

LATIDO AT CANA RUM BAR

I tried to play a bunch of records for the head nodders but instead for the dancefloor pretty active last night! Big thanks to Tati and all the friends who came but especially to the new friends who listen to the radio show. Met some great folks and even got to talk about immigration reform! Next Thursday I have the night off but ill return the following Thursday (the 20th).

KCRW PLAYLIST | 4 JUNE 2013

KCRW PLAYLIST | 4 JUNE 2013

Prior to this 3 hour set I sat in for Raul Campos. Listening to this show I can hear the tiredness in my voice. But 5 hours on my favorite radio station never stops me from digging deep into the crates! Kicked things off with the new (and old) Quadron plus a few favorites from Roman Gianarthur, J Live, Juicy J and much more. Peep the new Omar, Disclosure, Mount Kimbie, Tricky and Full Crate. Hope you enjoy!

CHINATOWN SUMMER NIGHTS | JUNE 15 2013

CHINATOWN SUMMER NIGHTS | JUNE 15 2013

We do it again! Never a night like this where we just crush a party hard! KG Superstar joins me on the mic next Saturday night. The amazing Liza Richardson rocks the turntables after! Make sure to get there early. My set is from 8-10 pm then it’s off to The Sayers Club for more Saturday night fun! And its free to the community. Make sure to swing through and say hi! Hope to see you.

QUADRON

QUADRON

I come into the basement every Monday night just playing the music that I love. It’s really that simple. And time to time you strike gold with a band that catches your ear. I’ll never forget the first time I heard them and where I was at. I was in bed tucked under the covers and Day was playing on my laptop and I had to stop everything.
