Hey! Another check in with you. Hope all is well. It’s nice to re-blog and connecting you in a medium that dates back to the days of when I first got involved in this thing we call the “blogosphere”. I had a lunch with an old friend, I, Ced. Ced is someone I admire cause he risked it all to pursue music. There was a point when he was living in his car, chasing his dreams, gigging at night, rehearsals and sessions around the clock. He’s still on the grind.
Today we were talking about knowing your worth. And It takes time to perhaps hit a point where you can realize what you contribute and understanding how that translates into money or time. But since realizing my worth, its been easy to step away from projects and dj residencies. There is a fear for most artists (including myself) that if you step away no one will be around the corner willing to scoop you up. 25 years of countless clubs, parties, various radio gigs on college + public radio, I can say once you make that jump and safely land, its liberation. It’s one of the best feelings.
Ced then flipped it in a way that I never looked at it. He explained how race plays a factor. Ced has personal experiences where certain folks who differ from his color tend to make more money. I’m happy to see him understand his worth, jump ship and see him off to London to work on music this month and not haver to deal with these social complexities.
I wish I could say something magical that would connect with you but the truth is you just have to make it happen. Im still far from my goals but I know my worth and its liberating. And fun.
This week’s rant is up! I wanted to fall back while my timeline on social media went off on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis winning Best Rap Album. Folks began to go off on the Recording Academy. But are you really shocked? Are you involved? Are you active? Listen to this week’s rant and let me know what you think! Lets create a discussion.
On December 5th we lost one of the most influential figures of our time. I saw the tweets and status updates in regards to the passing of Nelson Mandela but I just felt that being limited to 140 characters could serve his legacy no justice. What could I say or post that could capture my thoughts on such a wonderful life lived?
This rant was inspired by my friend Manal. She and some friends swung by my gig last night at Cana and somehow we got into this deep convo about life, politics and the passing of Mandela. His passing made me examine several things in which I talk about in this rant. First, social media activists versus a man who actually gives 26 years of his life and another being the CELEBRATION of Mandela’s life versus being somber in his passing. 95 years on Earth and being able to sketch your way into the history books for something you believe in is no easy task. He is the prime example of hope and persistance with your message. I hope you dig this rant. It’s been a minute since I recorded one of these but a simple tweet or update could do this extrordinary man’s life.
We had a Breaking Bad Finale Party with friends and we had to do a wrap up! Novena Carmel, Shawniece Swain, Nick Rosen, Kim and I all watched not sure what to expect for the finale! What did you think? And a big thanks to ShawnIece for the amazing Heisentreats! More info on her treats can be found on her twitter at @Luvmuffintreats.
Yoooo! Spoilers are dropped in this rant so if you are not up to date then do not listen! 2 episodes left in this historic series of drug dealing, lies, deception and power shifts. Just when you things can’t any worse for Walter White, BAMM!!!!! Hope you enjoy this rant. Feel free to leave your feedback and comments in the comment section!
You’re dammed if your do and dammed if you don’t! My Grandfather taught me that and never has that phrase been more on my mind then now. Let me start off by saying I am torn on this issue. I understand both perspectives and both sides have valid points. There is no doubt that the US is suffering from war fatigued. I think I’m one of those folks who understands President Obama’s perspective however I still believe that in terms of his “legacy” this does not help it one bit should he make the mistakes that were made by his predecessor. But I do think about the people of Syria and I think at the end of the day we as humans, not Americans, have a moral obligation to help the victims. Again, you’re dammed if your do and dammed if you don’t!
Okay. Your thoughts! And please keep it civil and respectful.

I was asked by Facebook follower Phillip Clark to comment on Forbe’s article regarding EDM’s Cash Kings who brought in millions of dollars of income. There has been lots of criticism towards EDM culture and accusations that point out to just how crazy it is for someone to make 40 plus million dollars by pushing knobs. Well, to be quite blunt, I see no problem with it. Good management, artist draw and excellent brand management all justify the pay. EDM is really huge at the moment. In a perfect world skills and live performance alone would be worth millions but we don’t live in a perfect world. Let me know your thoughts! Follow me on Twitter. And Peep the Forbes article
After a long day around town with Derek Taylor of The Park/Wallpaper, we ended up at the Sayers Club kitchen to catch last Sunday’s episode of Breaking Bad. Derek is not only an amazing drummer, funny dude but possibly the biggest tech geek ever. During the broadcast he and his band were on some kind of Google + chat recapping thoughts during commercial breaks. Absolute nerdery! Don’t worry there are hardly any spoilers in this rant but we both agreed that the pacing of this season is moving full steam ahead! What do you think will happen as progress further into the close of the season? Hit me with your thoughts! You can also follow Derek on twitter at @derekgtaylor.
This shot of Derek pretty much sums him up . Shot by Holly Port
Sometimes this nightlife thing can get you into conversations and situations that you just cant write into movies. But other times you find your self having a human interaction with another human being in the midst of a mid life crisis. Last night I met a gentleman at a venue with his side piece. Meanwhile his wife was hundreds of miles away with his family. Hope you enjoy this week’s rant.
Fresh out the theatre with a review of the much discussed doc “The Act Of Killing” which explores the characters involved in the mid 60’s extermination of communists and Chinese community living in Indonesia by paramilitary thugs and gangsters. Also discussed is the Anthony Weiner fiasco. Let me know your thoughts! Reach out on twitter at @anthonyvaladez.
This movie brings to light the life of Oscar Grant. It provides the humanity behind a man who has become a symbol. I enjoyed it although I was not as moved as I thought I might be possibly because this type of story is common where I come from. The bad guys always get away with a slap on the wrist. I would love to hear your thoughts! Let me know what you thought of the movie.
Rant #3 was suppose to be the end of the Trayvon topic but in response to the shutting down of the 10 Freeway by protesters and the Occupy Wall Street folks marching along a 4th of July day time party in the park I wanted to drop my 2 cents on.. Well.. Just hit play!
Wow! Todays rant was suppose to be my thoughts on my very first photo exhibit at Gabba Gallery but en route to the show I found out the verdict in the Zimmerman trial and well, that just messed up my day. Rather than share my 2 cents in 140 characters or less I figure Id just record a rant while driving home after a dj gig. Hit play and I’d love to hear your thoughts!
I have always wrestled with ways of sharing views on current and community affairs. Especially since I am trying to refrain from the “political” guy with views” and the older I get the more simplistic I get in my own speculation. I thought about writing blog posts but I thought I’d take it one step further thanks to my Soundcloud app on my I Phone. From here on out I will voice my thoughts on things that are happening in the news and might even record some discussions on topics that affect our community. The camera will still be in hand but capturing ideas, arguments and the voice is my time capsule of a moment in time. Join in on the conversation and add me on twitter. I would love to make this as interactive as possible as well as hear your thoughts and responses. I also want to stress that these opinions reflect my views and only my views. But most importantly I want to experiment with the means of creating dialogue. Hope you dig!
