CULTURE + REAL TIME ADVENTURES
Played this new J Cole cut on my show last week and fell in love with it. Then I saw the video and bam! On repeat. I’m not the biggest J Cole fan but he really does surprise me with his delivery every time when you bypass the singles.
The Funky President J Rocc swings through for a chat about his journey as a club dj in the OC. But then in came Peanut Butter Wolf to start the party and break down the history of the Ultimate Breaks and Beats series and it’s inspiration of sample/rap culture. Tales of digging, serving the homies at Mcdonalds are all told
Here’s a brief behind the scenes visual recap of my weekly adventures w/ King Most. KM joins me this Wednesday night in K Town (LA) at the Line Hotel outside of Pot Bar! Hope you dig the video recap!
Good times w/ the mighty King Most, Max Macveety on drums + the Sayers/SLS Vegas crew last night. I’ll be back on the decks tonight w/ The Sessions. If you are around, come say hi!
Images, videos can best describe my past 24 hours. And it continues tonight! Swing through at the SLS in Vegas. I’ll be back behind the turntables. Would love to see you.
Just landed into LA and ready to bring the party to The Sayers Club in Hollywood tonight. Brian Collier (Lauryn Hill/Too Short) and Nick Suhr (K Flay) join me on drums and Dj Syrehn is on the turntables. Big love to King Most for holding down the duties last night.
All videos taken from my instragram account. Go follow me!
Night one of our kick off weekly at the SLS Sayers Club in Vegas was quite the adventure. But the energy and madness during our performance was something else!!!! Big thanks to Jason Scoppa + the amazing staff at this wonderful spot! I’m there every Friday night! Swing through!
New snapshots and video this Sunday’s jump off at Insert Coin(s). Just landed into LA and I need a serious nap! It was awesome meeting all the incredible folks who came out and got down with us. The Knocks rocked it. Big love to all the staff and dancers who got down! The dancers below were amazing and I had to break out the GoPro!
Traveling across the US this year and engaging with listeners of the weekly radio show has really taught me about the power of radio and engagement. I always mention that being on at midnight makes you wonder who is listening. Watch a behind the scenes look at what goes down Monday nights on KCRW.
Thanks to the folks at GOPRO for the cameras. I have been documenting my journey as a person who ends up in the most random places. This past week I was in New Mexico working on a new video for my new record in addition to playing out across LA. I wanted to capture some of that magic in a new series of Vlogs.
Big thanks to GoPro of amazing Hero3 camera! I have had a blast documenting a lot of what a week in my life may look like! From all my residencies at Cana, Zanzibar, The Natural History Museum, Sayers and inside KCRW, it’s documented in this video!
It’s out! This project took months and months to make but it was also the easiest project to created with Nick Rosen. This project began as I started work on my second album for Plug Research and I would have these incredible sessions with Nick. We would record 2-3 songs a day then we would have downtime. We began starting songs from scratch, go grab coffee, return and hit record. Take a listen!
I had the pleasure of watching this man record some sessions one day with The Park. The way I shoot is I just simply feel out the artist’s energy. Derek said “just shoot” but I was never sure if Darondo was down for a camera in his face. Darondo became more welcoming with his one liners and laugh. Every laugh exposed a few missing teeth but a warm and loving heart. I just found out Darondo passed and it made me want to unearth this session.
Rainy Milo was all over my radio show last year with the release of hey EP. It’s good to hear new music followed by a music video for the track “Bankrobber”. Not her strongest track but I’ll take it.
One of my favorite bands is bringing their families into the fold. Inspiring video in which members of New Zealand’s Electric Wire Hustle perform with family members.
Forgot I had this little nugget in my laptop. Just uploaded it to the blog. Kendrick Lamar breaks down the importance of having a strategy and team behind your vision when producing product to a label.
Out last minute/secret show off the Boardwalk in Venice California. Fans were notified 10 minutes before the performance and were given secret wrist bands to enter the must see show of 2013. The band consisted of Miles Bonny on vocals and horn, Nick Rosen on percussion, Anthony Valadez on tambourine and Smedley the Frenchie providing the good energy.
Good times at Lis-Uh-N last night. Managed to grab a quick bite with friends at Umami Burger then warm things up on the turntables. Lots of special friends in the building. My friend Yash shot some great video while I was up playing something a little different and special. The new Kwabs is the first track which is really cool and mellow followed by a Waajeed beat. Anyways, further proof we like to experiment with sounds on Wednesday nights.
These past 2 nights have turned into dance parties while asking for your support during Raul Campo’s show. Some of you didnt believe the picture that went out on Instragram Thursday night so I thought I’d film it. Peep the video!
Meet Evan (Who’s last name I cant spell). He has played keys on my last 2 albums and cracks me up every time during downtime. Some of you might get it, others might not. Enjoy the short clip!
So honored to be a part of this Grammy campaign alongside Snoop Dog, Nas, Kaskade, Taylor Swift and friends! Peep the video!
Saturday nights at Sayers is where folks either end up in the air, thrashing into the drum kit, hanging from some elevated place, on the dance floor, head bobbing on the couch or on the deck. Last night we managed to witness 2 out of the previously mentioned. Derek Taylor and I raged through the soundsystem last night inside one of LA’s mysterious and fun spots hidden on the corner of Hollywood and Wilcox.
Our final Goods jump off of 2012 in the books! I think it’s fair to say that we gave Zanzibar a pre taste of New Years Eve with all the incredible dancers, friends and family in the building! We are humbled. Thank you to all our patrons through out the years who made every single Friday night special! Peep last night’s pics and our special video including KG and yours truly sneaking into the Ice skating rink during after hours!
Gettin’ my David Lynch on with 3 I phones, 2 eyes, 1 mouth and a Nikon D 90.
Folks got super wild this past Saturday night. Sometimes Im at a lost of words hence why I just turn on the camera and let it speak for itself. Watch the video.
New promo spot shot last Friday with KG Superstar breaking down why he loves Monday night’s on KCRW. Peep!
Last night after soundcheck Derek Taylor and I roamed Hollywood Blvd. We bumped into some energetic youth, got crunk for a bit then proceeded over to Sayers for an amazing night! Seriously incredible on so many levels! Thanks to all the friends who made it out and all the new ones! Watch the video!
I guess its fair to say Hiatus Kaiyote in a sense hijacked my blog theese past couple weeks. But when your praised by The Roots, Erykah Badu, Dirty Projectors, Animal Collective and Gilles Peterson, then by all means go ahead! Watch an exclusive live version of a forthcoming song and listen to our chat recorded last week during Nai Palm’s stay at the Vala HQ!
And another fun rowdy night at Sayers this past Saturday night. Derek Taylor stepped behind the drum kit and got down while I held down the turntables. Great energy, folks and vibe. Hope you dig! Watch the video clip!
I shot this while getting lost around the L.E.S and Brooklyn. It was nice to get away from the usual visuals in Los Angeles and put my boots to the pavement and capture what I saw. This is the wrap up video. Hope you enjoy! Watch!
If you have listened to my show on KCRW then you might know that I have hailed these guys as one of the break out bands of 2012. I managed to spend the day w/ Nai of the collective and watch her do her thing. Hope you enjoy this video.
This past Saturday at Sayers we welcomed back Derek Taylor on the kicks and snares. It was an incredible night over all. So great to see so many friends come out and get down with us in Hollywood. Watch this short clip!
Yes! Every Monday night I like to bring the records into the basement, hook up the Mac, dim the lights and lace up the dancing shoes while on air on the far left of the FM dial. Hope you might join me tonight at midnight! And watch the video!
Shout out to King Deluxe for the amazing job and editing. Watch the video for “Begins” and let me know what you think!
Before they were signed, before they blew the hell up! They were a couple of young kids hanging out one night in Venice. We ate garlic rolls, rode roller coasters and decided to record a session of Houstatlantavegas by request. Im super proud of Dane and Anna and all the amazing music they have created! Watch this old clip!
Kansas City’s very own Miles Bonny performing live in my living room for an intimate performance of 6 friends. Nick Rosen assists on cello. Watch!
As a die hard movie buff I can co/sign on this awesome collection shots of Kubrick’s ability to wide shits as means of effect to make you, the audience member not only feel involved but give you a sense of perspective of openness and pulls you in. That might be one of the artsy fartsy-ist lines ever but it holds so true! WATCH!!
Brand new video for “Bye Baby” from Nas’s latest “Life Is Good”. The Queensbridge lyricist airs how his drama with a past love on this cut. The minute I first heard this album this was my stand out cut. The soulful hook, the interesting key progression and the brutally honest content. Watch it!
Im so grateful to live in an era where soul music is spanning into a thousand different directions. One of them being in the 80 bpms with soft snares and 808’s accompanied by minimal keys and bass. Rainy Milo exemplifies this great production. It makes me want more from her. Check out her sounds!
I caught Homeboy Sandman at SXSW in 2010. I was hooked. By 2011 we linked up at the following SXSW and lots of great things had happened since. Now working on releases for Stonesthrow, this brother gets to showcase his unique rhyme patterns to a new audience. Peep these great videos!
This is someone who I have been championing for a minute. This brother has been hustling for a minute now with a few record industry setbacks but thats not stopping him. Liam Bailey has been teaming up with the Truth And Soul label for a couple of singles that are just awesome! Check out his latest video for “Please Love Me”
Fresh new and edited. I managed to snap pictures, shoot video and rock this party all at the same time! Great crowd and energy! Check out the video!!
This is possibly one of my favorite Miles Bonny cuts of all time. Teaming up w/ beat maker Suff Daddy, the two create magic with 5’O Clock Suff. The perfect song for a Sunday or when the sun creeps below the surface and the moon begins to hover. Peep the vid.
