It’s been a minute since I hopped in an uber with the camera in hand but this was my calling. I wanted to be a fly on the wall and capture the emotions of the people marching in DTLA today but at times caught myself getting choked up. Seeing kids, families and normal folks like myself participating and from all walks of life really gave me hope about the future. Im always optimistic when it comes to hope but I remember not wanting to get out of bed the day after the election. Anyways, here are some of my snapshots from today’s Anti Trump Rally.

Looking forward to having Miles Bonny at City Beats, a monthly hand picked and curated series by yours truly alongside ArtsBrooksField. This all takes place at FIGaAT7th in the heart of DTLA. Joining me on the turntables is KPFK’s Francesca Harding with Miles Bonny making his LA debut!

Miles is an artist that has been long on my radar and in constant rotation on my show Monday nights on KCRW. He is never afraid of exploring any genre or style and adds his unique touch of soul on the mic and/or on the horns.

Hope you can join us this Saturday, July 16th 2016.

Attachment-1

I’m super excited about curating this year’s talent at FIGat7th in DTLA. CITY VIBES is about showcasing locals and folks we simply love. I can’t spell the beans just yet but so far things are looking super soulful and I also brought on board a few buddies of mine to curate some special editions.  But our first edition is this Saturday and none other than RES!

RES and I use to do shows at the now defunct TempleBar and Little Temple.  I use to love opening for her cause you never really knew what she would do or who she would bring up stage. There was that one night she had a little known artist by the name of Santigold open up. I also had the pleasure of hitting the road with RES as we opened for Jean Grae and Talib Kweli in various cities. It was a real eye opening experience for me for to work with live musicians and provide the scratches and string samples.

This Saturday I hope you might join us for live music at FIGat7th! Come through and enjoy all the cool eateries in the area! I’ll be there as well hanging out and playing some records. Would love to see you there this Saturday. Swing through! It’s our pre Saturday night get down before I have to head to Sayers in Hollywood! (plug).

Shout outs to 4th and Spring for the invite to check out some cool hidden treasures in DTLA including abandoned living areas and helipads resting high above the city, guarded by patrols. We linked up and worked our way up to a “certain building” and managed to slip through “certain obstacles” to grab these snapshots as the sun set. Check out 4th and Spring’s work here.  More snapshots on the way! Check back soon!

Yesterday after hitting up the Artist and Fleas Market I walked over to one of my favorite LA spots, the 6th Street Bridge and began taking snapshots. I have always brought friends and tourists to this area. Word is reconstruction and a possible face lift may change this landmark’s image but I wanted to capture these images that have always connected DTLA to Boyle Heights and East LA. If you ever get a chance, head below the bridge to an open walk/driveway that leads you directly to the wash.

Things are moving super fast! A little fast. I had this great talk with Levi Maestro last night about the concept of time. We recorded the chat for a future podcast but it’s really interesting how we put time into perspective. Anyhoo, when things get crazy I tend to break out the camera for some piece of mind. Hope you enjoy these snapshots. No theme, no photo essay. Just what I see along the way this thing we call life.

First things first, Happy 2014. A big thanks to the folks at Cana Rum Bar/213 Nightlife for making last night happen. My guest list was cut off and maxed out yesterday and I could not think of a more intimate setting than inside this wonderful venue that I call home on Thursday nights. If you were there then you saw my crazy 7 plus hour marathon mix that just about went into every musical direction I could think of. I wanted to snap more shots inside but the venue was so dam packed and I could not make my around. It was also great meeting lots of wonderful listeners of my radio show and podcast! Somehow when the cloud of smoke faded I found myself greeted by the morning day light sometime around 7 am. Great way to kick off 2014. Have a great year!

After djing at Cana Rum Bar last night I had this urge to take some snapshots. The night felt right and I had this new Blood Orange cd on repeat. I wish I had brought my camera but instead settled for these I phone snapshots. Hope you dig.

Almost there! November 19th is the date for  on my first single set to drop on Plug Research. The forthcoming LP  features some of my favorite artist and musicians from around the world who collaberated on this project  which I am excited to share in early 2014.  The first single features LA emcee/producer/musician Zack Sekoff who kills the track “Zack’s Thesis“. I mean KILLS IT!  You can also get to know Zack, who was a recent guest on my podcast. Listen!  Remixes will also feature my band Los Girls (project with Nick Rosen) and Kalva Won. Both remixes really surprised me and are set into two different musical spectrums.  The video for the single  is set to drop in the coming weeks and features a few of our friends set somewhere in DTLA. You might recognize a few of them.  Big thanks to Holly Port for directing the video for Zack’s Thesis and also Ray Riarratana for camera assistance. Hold tight!

During the past couple of weeks I have discussed how the digital community has affected and benefited artists but this time around I wanted to switch gears and talk to folks who are doing good for our city!  Grand Park’s record speaking alone in terms of the wonderful accomplishments but just in case you need some, peep the pics from the Block Party or the ones from the history Park Your Politics during election night!

These guys are providing LA with some of the best parties and community events under the sun! Grand Park is turning 1 and celebrating Thursday night, October 10th with Jeremy Sole on the turntables and Ethio Cali on the live instruments plus guests! Tati, Javier and Josh swing through the basement to talk about how important this wonderful space is to the city of LA! Make sure to join them as they celebrate the first year anniversary of this wonderful space in DTLA!

Best 4th of July party ever! Big love to all the folks who came out to Grand Park’s very 1st of July Party!  The weather was on point and so was the energy. I started off the day with some soul vibes w/ some Stevie edits and brasilian breaks then Get Lit hit the stage showcasing some poetry. These were LAUSD high schoolers dropping knowledge on the crowd. Ethio Cali and Jungle Fire followed with some world flavor and the crowd began to build and build.  During my breaks I ventured through the crowd with my camera and took some great shots of the water fountain and all the kiddos running around. It was back to the turntables and the crowd began to move a little more and I just had to drop Cube’s “Today Was A Good Day” somewhere in my next set followed by some Mana which really got a great reception pre La Santa Cecilia!  LSC took it home and then it was time to intro Grand Park director Lucas Rivera and Board of Supervisor Gloria Molina who thanked the crowd then came the pyro! Whoop!  Then the ride home was an adventure too!

It was an incredible day at Grand Park! While en route home I managed to snap some shots of some folks west of the 110 Freeway firing off fireworks on the streets.  It reminded me of my days as a youngster and staying out past my bed time to watch fireworks illuminate the San Fernando sky.  Peep the blog tomorrow for Grand Park pics! Hope these pics make you rewind in your mind!

You know it’s Summer time when folks come to the clubs wearing less and less. And what better way to kick off the season then with some new wheels! The residencies were fun this weekend. Thanks to all who came out to Cana Rum Bar, Zanzibar, Sayers and at Sunday Sessions at Grand Park! Fun times all around. Hope to see you back at Grand Park for our 4th of July jump off! Info here.

This week has been crazy for me personally. My perspective on life changed a bit due to a sudden health scare. I began to  walk more, sit in the shower for longer periods of time and restricted myself from more work. But the camera was still in hand, Metallica came out and heard some Cumbia at my Thursday night gig at Cana, I got to see Jupiter and learn about the solar system at the Observatory, Venice remained beautiful, strangers smiled, strangers continued to pass out drunk on Sunset Blvd., did a set at Dublab and someone flashed her boobs.  Welcome to my life in the form of jpegs.

I love all things that surround us. Buildings, tree’s, random street art, or maybe even the way the sun might glare off a window or building. But who creates these structures? Who decides which way to face a window which might reflect the magic hour sunset? I have built an appreciation for buildings with soul and wall’s with meaning. Michael Maltzan is one of those architects who creates and designs complexes with a purpose.  Not only is he responsible for luxurious homes, museums and educational institutions but he is also responsible designing beautiful social housing in DTLA.  Talking to Michael I could sense his heart and good intentions for the community and anything he is a part of. And this brother knows his music! Take a listen.  I had a great time doing this!

Many errands to run but I was in good company listening to last night’s WKCR Stretch Armstrong X Bobbito show. I also brought my camera and began snapping shots along my way back to the west side.  Im telling you, never a dull day with the camera in hand.

Tonight! It’s LATIDO at Cana Rum Bar! Just one block east of the Staples Center and hidden in a secret spot away from the madness.  Tonight I’ll be back on air w/ Raul Campos asking for your support from 10-11 pm then heading over to Cana for a night of world flavor and tropical rum!  I love this spot!  The staff are well versed on the amazing tastes and rum’s and the door guy actually smiles and ask’s how your day was!  Good vibes and energy.  Dj Destroyer warms up the room with his dancehall selections so get there early!  Just mention Anthony Valadez and/or KCRW for free entry/membership!  Hope to see you tonight LA!
